Background introduction and demand analysis

The East Geophysics Physics Drilling Co., Ltd of China Petroleum Group (called as East Geophysics Physics with the abbreviation BGP is the professional service subsidiary of China Petroleum natural gas group).

As a cross-country enterprise, East earth physics Co. Ltd mainly engages the earth physical drilling business and other auxiliary businesses such as earth physical drilling, multi-area development, tourism reception and public cause. Now BGP mainly engages in the technology and equipment R&D, product manufacturing, technology introduction and product marketing for the land and shallow ocean earthquake drilling and integrated physical collection, processing, explanation and earth physical (chemistry) drilling, contracts the abroad and domestic technology engineering and labor outsourcing. Now the BGP has 102 earthquake job teams, 6 VSP teams and 17 integrated physical drilling teams. , BGP business covers 29 provinces, autonomous regions and 89 big and small basin (or areas) during the long-term petroleum gas drilling development. BGP is dedicated to globalized development. till Jun, 2006,, the international business extends to four large continents and 30 countries. BGP has 43 overseas job teams, 29 overseas offices and 12 overseas earthquake data processing research centers BGP land earthquake drilling mark is the 44% of the global land drilling survey and ranks the first position in the world. Now its comprehensive strength is ranked in top three positions. BGP has passed the qualification certifications of seven internation petroleum companies, including ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, Eni, Chevron, Total and Conocophillips. Now BGP has become the well-known bands in the global earth physical technical service area.

The manual means is used to get the original earthquake source in the petroleum drilling. The detector collects a serial of pulse signals from the detection points around earthquake source to collect a large number of original earthquake signals. Next the large number data are entered into the super computer and the earthquake information processing software such as P, CGG, OMEGA, Landmark and GeoEast will run. With the routine processing and prior-overlapping offset, the system will finally get an earthquake section. The experienced geological experts will interpret the earthquake section to get the earth structure and provide the basis for the petroleum and natural gas and mine identification. The earthquake processing will involve a large number data, computing work and communication traffic, so the requirement for the storage capability, computing capability and I/O communication capability of the computer is high. the high-performance computer can meet these requirements.

With the test, we conclude that Inspur server based on the Intel Nehalem processor provides the best performance.

For the higher requirement in the BGP scheme, we construct the high-performance platform according to the following rule:

(I)        High performance: The computing node is established with Inspur server platform based on the Nehalem processor. The platform consists of the high-density frame nodes, core 1000M computing network and core 1000M management network.

(II)      Low power consumption: The efficient power supply is used at the computing node. Compared with other manufacturers, our platform can save over 20% in the power cost.

(III)    Easy to use: The cluster is configured with the easy-to-use cluster management system for easy remote management.

(IV)    High scalability: The requirement of the high-performance computing for the computing capability is unlimited. The established system meets the certain scalability requirement and is easy to scale.

Inspur high-performance system solution

We establish the BGP high-performance computing platform cluster system with Inspur TS10000 in this scheme. The computing node based on the open IA architecture is used in the product scheme. The Intel Xeon 45nm Nehalem Quad-core processor is used. the 1000Mbps Ethernet with a high price/performance ratio is used in the computing network. the established high-performance platform is sued for the applications such as petroleum drilling and oil field simulation.

The system includes 240 dual-channel computing nodes and 16 dual-channel IO nodes in this system. the established high-performance computing system can provide the peak 21790 billion/s high-performance computing capability and can make the user meet the high-performance computing requirement with a lower cost. Inspur low-power server is used in the node system to reduce the later investment cost much. To guarantee that the system can stable run in the severe environment, the highly stable and reliable frame server is used.

System scale

The system includes 240 NF5120 computing nodes (dual-channel Quad-core Nehalem X5550 2.66GHz processor, SAS 450G15000 rps harddisk, 24G DDR3 1333MHz memory and 3GB/core), 16 IO nodes (Nehalem X5550 2.66GHz processor, SAS 450G15000 rps harddisk, 24G DDR3 1333MHz memory, 3GB/core, redundant power and fan), high-speed 1000M computing network (established based on the core switch) and high-speed 1000M management network (as the spare computing network).

Features of system scheme

(I)        High-performance: the latest 45nm Nehalem Quad-core product, low-power DDR3 memory and enterprise SAS harddisk are used in the node system. the leading core switch is used in the computing network to improve the parallel efficiency of the system much. The core 1000M switch is used in the management system. IO node is configured with the redundant power supply to guarantee the data security.

(II)      Concurrent application and development: Inspur provides GPU working team to collaborate the application migration to GPU.

(III)    Easy to use: for easy routine use, the easy-to-use Linux system is installed on all node computers. With the management, monitoring and alarm function of Inspur TS10000 supervision software, the whole system can realize the remote operation and management.

(IV)    High scalability: with the open cluster architecture, the system is easy to extend. The node computer can extend on demand. the system can extend seamlessly.
